Yogyakarta – In Nadiana opinion
Yogyakarta? Hmm…..the reason i pick to have vacation in Yogyakarta because…..well, i want to visit Indonesia and Bali sound very commercial. I thought of Yogyakarta because it’s been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For our last day in Yogyakarta, we went to nearby morning market.
It’s quite interesting but we had bad experience and got ripped off TWICE by bus and trishaw. Lesson that we learned from this trip, ALWAYS get a cab to go anywhere in Yogyakarta because it is more safe! Imagine this, we took a cab from our hotel to morning market and it cost us Rp23,000 but to go back, it cost us Rp50,000. Do you know why?
We actually wanted to get a cab to go back to our hotel after visit the morning market but we couldn’t find 1. This stupid bus (I forgot to take photo of this bus driver and his assistant) said that he can sent us to our hotel and he charge us Rp20,000. I don’t know why but i didn’t really trust him. Rp20,000 by bus? It’s not even express bus! And the seat is so small…..i’m so lucky my bf is not that big. I told Paul that if he didn’t sent us in front of our hotel, i’ll beat him with my bag!
Paul advice me not to have any confrontation because of Rp 20,000. I don’t care about the money but i hate someone cheat me. This’s my 1st time i got cheated while travelling. He drop us to….i have no idea where we are but he asked us to walk a little bit and then he said turn left and we’ll reach our hotel. Yeah right
After we confirm we are lost, we ask local people and this trishaw guy claim that he know where’s our hotel and he can sent us. I asked him how much and he said Rp 20,000. I inform Paul and he agreed to take this trishaw.
After almost an hour inside the trishaw, we still haven’t reach our hotel. I asked Paul to take this picture because i’m too bored. I asked the trishaw guy….how long it takes to reach and he said our place quite far. I asked him again how far is far and he couldn’t answer me. We saw a cab and we asked him to stop but he didn’t and after 3 times, Paul shouted and asked him to stop, then only he stopped
Finally, we took a cab and i pay Rp 10,000. It’s actually easy to travel by cab because they use meter. Overall, Yogyakarta is not that bad city except there’s no starbuck & nice shopping mall that sell latest outfits. I went to shopping mall in Marlboro town and the outfits very lousy. If i were to live there, i’ll miss nice outfits, Caramel Frappuccino & cheese cake

Hi Nadiana, you will find Starbuck at Ambarukmo Plaza, not far from Adisucipto Airport. I suggest you to having friend with local people. This will avoid you many tugs. Well, it’s always happen in any part of the world. I got similar experience in KL back several years ago. But that’s the travel about isn’t? Oh one more time, would you try ‘local cafe’ – a unique way for Jogjakarta socialize than hanging around american cafe. Try angkringan -a mobile cafe that served best tea and snack. You will find people are nicer and welcome to you. Salam Ambar.
Really? Our hotel driver say that there’s no starbuck.
I don’t mind to hang out at local cafe but i don’t see any cafe at all. Not even in marlboro town.
well, I suggest you next time when visit Jogja open this excellent website Yogyes run by local. There are lot things beyond Malioboro. You will find something that more humble and meaningful. Salam Ambar.
Hi Ambar,
I just check out the website. Wow,i missed a lot info
The food look so good…..maybe someday i’ll visit Jogja again. Thanks for the info.
P/S : Anyway, i visitted your website. Very nice.
I checked out her website too. I’m actually trying to plan a solo travel for myself… and I have been hesitating because I feel awkward just going out to a bar in my local town by myself. Can you imagine me traveling to Costa Rica alone? I think it will be lonely and weird.
What will I do, lie on a beach alone? I’m going to be the weird guy by himself.
I’m going back to read more from the girl who lives in Sunnyvale. (I’ve been there!) (In fact, I worked there many years ago.)
Actually travel solo can be very fun. In fact,it is one of the way to be more closer with the local + it’ll be nice if you can speak their language. I learned Indonesian language from tv & their accent sometimes can make me confuse. Lol.
Actually, traveling alone can be quite good sometimes. It forces you to be open in meeting new people. I find doing active things and tours is better for not feeling alone. Americans don’t get much vacation so, in my experience, if you wait around for your friends there to have the time, money and motivation to do the same things you want to do, you may not be doing much. Here’s a page I did about my SE Asia travels:

I highly recommend Burma
I kind of have a rule that for small amounts of money I won’t get into an argument. It’s just not worth the upset. Yeah, I know, there’s the principle of the thing, but for 50 cents or a buck or two, is it really worth it? Especially when you’re dealing with people in serious poverty. I just don’t give those people my business anymore.
Just because you are poor, doesn’t mean it is ok to cheat, Paul. Let me give you example, do you think it is necessary to become a prostitute just because you are poor or uneducated? That’s lame excuse. I’m not that smart and is it an excuse for me to become prostitute or a mistress for rich men? No!
Anyway, you should be greateful because i don’t slam my bag towards that stupid fellow
I’m too cute to get into arguement….lol
Yeah, that’s my excuse too. I forg0t to mention, that was my other reason.
Copycat….get your own line!
One of the reason why i love Paul…he’s gila….just like me
