Anwar may emerge the hero in sodomy saga

Taken from Malaysia Today :

The sodomy allegation confronting Anwar Ibrahim could end up helping him more than hurting him in his drive to lead Malaysia’s opposition to power for the first time in history. The mercurial former deputy premier says a 23-year-old aide’s accusation of sodomy is part of a dark conspiracy to block him from ending the reign of the National Front, which has ruled uninterrupted since Malaysian independence in 1957.

Much is at stake if the established order is overturned. The parties comprising the Front directly or indirectly own some of Malaysia’s biggest companies and dispense patronage in the form of project contracts worth billions of dollars.

Ten years ago, then premier Mahathir Mohamad fired Mr Anwar, his heir-apparent, when they disagreed about how to handle Malaysia’s plunge into the Asian financial crisis.

Mr Anwar took his argument to the streets, was soon arrested on corruption and sodomy charges, and jailed for six years before the Federal Court, citing flimsy evidence, overturned the verdict in 2004 after Dr Mahathir retired.

So perhaps it is not surprising that opinion polls show the vast majority of respondents believe Mr Anwar is innocent of the charge. The court of public opinion, rather than the court of law, will most likely decide this case.

Images of Mr Anwar showing up in court with a neck collar brace and a black eye at his 1998 sodomy trial after the police chief beat him up behind bars remain fresh in the collective memory.

”My take is that the likely outcome will be no prosecution, because this sort of thing will be incredibly difficult to prove, unless they have a video recording or a picture,” said James Chin, professor of political science at Monash University, Malaysia. ”It’s one man’s word against the other’s.”

Mr Anwar says he has a solid alibi backed by witnesses that proves he wasn’t at a luxury Kuala Lumpur apartment at the time his accuser said they had sex there.

The attorney-general, under investigation himself after Mr Anwar filed a police report this week saying he fabricated evidence against him as a young prosecutor in the 1998 sodomy case, might think twice about taking Mr Anwar to court.

Any trial could be long and controversial, a reprise of 1998, featuring angry protests and disenchantment in the majority Malay community over the humiliation of an iconic hero to many of them.

Moreover, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has taken pains to rehabilitate the tattered credibility and independence of the police and courts, making a guilty verdict far less certain this time.

Mr Chin thinks Mr Anwar is in a win-win situation, even if he is charged with a crime for which he can be jailed for up to 20 years. ”If he’s charged, he can claim it’s a political prosecution and use it to mobilise his supporters. But if the government decides not to prosecute, he can go back to his supporters and say it’s just harassing me.”

In any case, the battle for power has been joined and the pace of events could start to accelerate.

The opposition alliance made historic gains in a March 8 general election, winning five of 13 state governments and coming within 30 seats of taking control of the 222-member parliament. The alliance has since been wooing defectors from PM Abdullah’s National Front and insists it is on target to gain a parliamentary majority by mid-September.

Mr Abdullah, meanwhile, has been fending off challenges to his leadership of the increasingly fractious United Malays National Organisation (Umno), the dominant party in the Front.

Things could come to a head when the party holds leadership elections in December. Deputy Premier Najib Razak hinted last Friday that he would contest the party presidency.

”Anwar has no choice but to fight back hard,” said Yang Razali Kassim, senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University’s School of International Studies in Singapore. ”Politically, he has to deploy and accelerate all his moves to capture power.”

Mr Anwar will continue to bellow about a conspiracy to keep Mr Abdullah and Mr Najib on the defensive. ”It will destabilise [the National Front] more than it helps Anwar for the very simple reason that people will say why is it that under Abdullah there is crisis after crisis,” Mr Chin says.

The Anwar case has turned into a big headache at the worst time for Mr Abdullah and Umno, says Tricia Yeoh, director of the Centre for Public Policy Studies in Kuala Lumpur. ”Umno officials say privately that they’re worried about how this affects the party.”

Mr Yang Razali also sees the heat intensifying on Mr Abdullah and his government, as the Anwar-led opposition mounts an all-out push to win over public opinion. ”More [National Front] MPs may swing around to his side, fed up with what they see as yet another conspiracy to destroy an innocent man,” he says. ”Anwar will then get the numbers to form a government, which he says he already has, even as police investigations go on.” - REUTERS

My personal opinion :

I don’t believe Anwar do that. In fact everyone know his health condition and back pain. What IF he did, i think it’s between him and God. Malaysia need a good Prime Minister. Someone clean from corruption, not racist and someone who’s intelligent. I seen this good quality from Anwar Ibrahim.

Dear Editor,
The way i see it on the sodomy case of Anuar, is very simple indeed. As a muslim he is bound by the islamic faith and rules. If he had done the crime then which set of laws should he be prosecuted?? The islamic court(syariah court) or the civil court (Federal laws/laws of the land??)
Even if he had sins then its between him and god and the other sinner. Otherwise he has to be found guilty beyond reasonable doubts, only then can we believed he is guilty. On the other hand we citizen must take into account the possibility of politic plots.
The main issues here is the leadership of the country. Whether we still want ABB & gang or back to Mahathirism in the govn or we can try out the new approach by Anuar. Presently we have known the previous two leaders of style of governing. So we need to balance between good for rakyat or contend with the way it is now.
And for the crime alleged is not dreadful crime(as murder) in terms of civil rights but is most dreadful in terms of muslim code laws.

SEX AND THE C4

Sodomy is a useful word
recently said and heard,
in Malaysian homes and offices
it’s all about famous orifices.
What is going on, you wonder
when Bala steals the thunder,
finger pointing the magic word
to the delight of a horny herd
Organs united, names forgotten?
VIPs are really rotten
Saifool he knows and did not know
doubts about Aminah begin to grow
of whose loose lips he was afraid
but liked her other end instead;
of course he knew it wasn’t right
but it felt so good and tight!
You could not hump like Greeks
the Hindenburg’s fat cheeks;
what her hubby found so succulent
was making Rosmah trucculent.
And so she thought, the time was due
for a nice Mongolian barbecue.
Enter the analyst, not so anal,
who found the girl too banal;
fearing supernatural harm
from her juicy feminine charm,
he hired Bala straightaway
to keep the honeytrap at bay
but private dicks were of no match
for Aminah’s superlative snatch
and now that Najib had had his fill,
he would not share the till;
right after the submarine deal,
Aminah’s fate he would seal.
Now Rosmah had one idea
on how to kenakan dia
“Let’s bomb the bombshell,
let’s send her to hell.”
Thus perished the hapless beauty
after translation and booty duty;
now Rosmah’s ass was happy
until one blogger got yappy;
this Hindenburg nearly caught fire
yet to sue she has no desire.
But Najib’s part in this murder
will travel much further;
despite his media actions
and one or two retractions,
some questions will remain
a big part of his bane–
how did Altantuya really die?
and why did he have to lie?
Did he pay off Bala savvily,
or threaten to C4 his family?
What acts could be more despised?
With his money, we’re not surprised;
after all, he’s such a bully beast,
to him and him alone, at least,
magic words that cannot apply–
are useful for making rivals die.
